First research project: to help us (persons recently on the fence) see that what’s acceptable in mainstream is not at all helpful to us,
in fact the opposite is true: it’s actually harmful to the listener, the observer, the “partaker”…it’s a negative part of a big negative whole.
Look up a current pop song, it’s sung by a girl and titled “bad guy”…don’t look up the video, but the lyrics.
As you read the lyrics of the song “bad guy” and ask yourself the following questions. The questions come
from our doing research to help you do this research:
Wired to Grow
http://www.wiredtogrow.com/5-questions-to-ask/
5 questions to ask before you say (write) anything (sing) to anyone (song):
1. is this true?
2. is it helpful?
3. is it inspiring?
4. is it necessary?
5. is it kind?
Second research project: In the 20th century there was a song called “Material Girl”.
Here’s one question: is there a difference between “bad guy” and “Material Girl”? If so, what is it?
The research we did to help you think about this song is from wikihow to do anything, this one is how to “Think Before Speaking”
https://www.wikihow.com/Think-Before-Speaking, look at the different points…
see #3: “make one point at a time and offer additional information only if needed”
What is the intent of these songs?
What type of effect might singing/performing these lyrics repeatedly have on the artist’s life?
In the lyrics, the girl will also tell you of intimate sexual acts…again, the singer, as she performs
this song, will then be repeatedly telling her audience about this.
How do we feel about hearing this? Outside of pop music,
do we enjoy hearing details about sex that our friends have been having?
Another exercise would be to see how the actions of the lyrics of this song plays out:
Pretend you are the sister of the boy that the singer has her sights on…be prepared because
part of this girl’s intention is “might seduce your dad”. So this means that she’d not only
hurt your brother (who thought the girl was into him), but also your father.
Once your father is hurt (“I like it when you get mad”), then the part of the lyrics
“make your mama sad type” would come into play. And then, you can see that the girl, the
singer of these lyrics has reached her full “empowerment”: she has destroyed a whole family.
And, in the end, after that’s been accomplished, what of the singer herself? What’s going to happen to her?
What kind of life is she devoting her life to?
